Last winter was the worst flu season since 1997 At the peak — the week ending December 27, 2025 — 8.2% of all outpatient medical visits in the United States were for flu-like illness. What made it so bad: subclade K Each year's flu vaccine has to be formulated months in advance, based on which viruses look most likely to circulate. Last year, an influenza A(H3N2) virus that scientists call subclade K emerged after that decision was already made. It had drifted antigenically — changed just enough that the vaccine already in production wasn't a close match. Then it became the dominant strain. The vaccine still offered real protection against severe illness and hospitalization, but it was chasing a moving target. That includes a specific change to protect against the H3N2 subclade K virus that drove last winter's surge. It is unusual for every component to change in a single year.
